Agios Nikolaos Beaches

The town of Agios Nikolaos is one of the most popular places on Crete for tourists. One reason is the many beautiful beaches in Agios Nikoloas and its surroundings. This article gives an overview of the beaches in the capital of East Crete

Ammos Beach

This beach is at the exit of a small port (marina) in the center of town. Smaller boats like yachts and fishing boats moor here. You can watch the boats entering and leaving the marina from Ammos beach.

As everywhere on the beach in the city of Agios Nikolaos you can rent sunbeds and parasols for a few Euro. Since Ammos beach is quite short, the city beach is quickly crowded in summer. This is especially true for the weekend, although many locals have time for the Paralia (Greek word for beach). Despite the ships and the harbour, the water is very clean.

Behind the Amoudi Beach there are some good taverns, cafes and fast food restaurants with gyros pita and the like. Out of town the Ammos Beach changes into a pebble beach. Here you can see especially well how clear the water is.

The restaurant Basilico is recommendable at the Ammos beach in Agios Nikolaos. Besides Greek dishes there is also good Italian cuisine. With excellent homemade pasta and pizza including sun and beach you feel like on holiday in Italy.

Kitroplatia City Beach

The Kitroplatia Beach is even more central in Agios Nikolaos. There are sun loungers, umbrellas and some nice restaurants in the background, which are not overpriced.

Interesting is the large sign, which informs about the animals and plants in the water before the small sandy beach and the neighbouring cliffs. Kitroplatia means citrus square. On the square behind the Kitroplatia beach in earlier centuries mainly lemons were loaded on ships for export.n.

Our tavern tip at the beach Kitroplatia is the Maistrali. The delicious chicken a la Creme with rice and French fries only cost 7.50 euros in 2016. One of the employees lived in Germany for several years and speaks good German. Large menu, the dishes look fresh.

Almiros Beach

This is a longer beach two kilometers outside the city. At Almiros beach (also written Almyros) it is not quite so crowded. One goes from the city about half an hour. A small river flows here into the sea. You can cross it on a pedestrian bridge.

The Almiros beach changes into water relatively flat at many places. Also the Almyros Beach is a sandy beach. It is the most popular beach in Agios Nikolaos. There are some providers who rent water sports vehicles and the like.
