What airport on Crete should I fly to? Crete is relatively large. By car you need more than 5 hours from Eastern Crete (e.g. Ierapetra) to Western Crete (e.g. Kissamos). The two big airports Chania and Heraklion are about 2.5 hours drive from each other. So the choice of the airports on Crete depends on the desired holiday destination. If you want to go to the west of Crete, the airport in Chania is the better choice, if you want to go to the east of the island, Heraklion is the better option. The important tourist resorts Rethimno, Plakias and Agia Galini are about the same distance away from both airports. It is much more likely to find a good flight to Airport eraklion than to Airport Chania. The reason is simple: There are about twice as many flights to Heraklion as to Chania, both in total and from England and Germany. Heraklion is simply the much larger airport, even though Chania has caught up a bit in recent years Map of Crete
There is little difference between the two airports in terms of infrastructure. Both airports now have good public bus connections to the city centres. It is cheaper to take a taxi in Heraklion. This is because the center is only 4 kilometers away, in Chania it is almost 15 km. There are many car rentals at both airports. The road connection is better in Iraklio (also named Heraklion). It takes only 3 minutes from the airport to get to Heraklion on the E75 highway, which connects all major cities in Crete east-west. In Chania it takes about 20 minutes to reach the main road of Crete. Those who need a hotel close to the airport will probably find it easier in Heraklion. It is easy to book accommodation in the city centre, only 3-4 kilometres away. In Chania there are few hotels close to the airport. At the most some smaller ones about one kilometre away in the place Kathiana. In Heraklion, the Hotel Sofia is the closest accommodation to the airport we know of (a little more than one kilometre). From which cities in Germany can you get to which airport? Ryanair, for example, flies to Chania from Bremen, Hahn (Rhineland-Palatinate) and Memmingen (Bavaria). Condor and / or TUIfly fly from the major airports in Germany to Chania. These are, for example, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Munich, Stuttgart and Hanover. Heraklion airport can be reached from almost all large and many small airports in Germany as well as from both airports in Berlin, Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, Munich, Hamburg, Stuttgart, Hanover, Nuremberg, Cologne, Leipzig, Karlsruhe, Saarbrücken, Bremen, Dresden, Münster, Kassel (new), Erfurt and Rostock. So you only get to Chania from Memmingen and Frankfurt-Hahn. From Frankfurt, Bremen, Düsseldorf, Munich, Stuttgart and Hanover you can fly to Chania as well as Heraklion. These data are only valid for the tourist season and are examples. In winter there are no direct flights to Crete. You always have to change, mostly in Athens. What about the third airport in Sitia? This airport is very small. From here there are well under 10 flights per day. Mostly none of them go abroad. Tourists use this airport very little. The few flights go to Athens and to some smaller islands, especially to Kasos. Also some flights per week from Sitia to Preveza in northwest Greece are offered. No airline flies from Germany to Sitia. Current information at the beginning of 2018: From the 2018 season there will be considerably more flights to Sitia. Direct connections between Sitia and Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf are planned.
