Lefkogia

The village of Lefkogia

Lefkogia is a small village in the south of Crete. It is about 5 kilometers away from the tourist beach resort of Plakias. The nearest beach is in Skinaria (see below).

Sometimes you can also see the spelling Lefkogeia. In the small village centre there is a supermarket and several restaurants. All these buildings are on the thoroughfare.

The tavern Stelios in the centre of Lefkogia is popular among the regulars of Plakias. Greek home cooking is served like meat dishes (large portions, low prices). The other two are small cafes with a limited choice of food. With Maria and Platia not much has changed in the last 20 to 30 years. Much reminds of Crete from the good, old time, both are very inexpensive.

Many tourists who come to Lefkogia are hikers. The hike on the Timios Stavros is especially popular. The summit of the mountain with a wonderful view, chapel and summit book can be reached from Lefkogia in about one hour (one way).

Most buses from Rethymno to Plakias pass through Lefkogia. The bus stop is in the centre of the village not far from the supermarket. In summer there are about 6 buses from Lefkogia to and from Rethymno (fare slightly more than 4 Euro in 2018). There are also many buses to and from Plakias. In the season (about May to October) there are also small buses to the monastery Preveli with a stop at the footpath from the beach Preveli.

The beach Skinaria

One of the most beautiful beaches of the area around Plakias is the beach of Skinaria. It can only be reached by car from Lefkogia. You drive from Plakias to Lefkogia and turn right in the centre of the village (signpost available). On a narrow, asphalted road you drive through a beautiful landscape with many flowers in spring to the beach Skinaria. In many places, the road is so narrow that one has to drive backwards in case of oncoming traffic.

The picture shows the beach Skinria near Plakias in April. Unfortunately Skinaria is not that empty in summer anymore. There are many sunshades and deckchairs and often hundreds of bathers. Behind the beach Skinaria near Lefkogia is a good tavern. Nudism was common in Skinaria until a few years ago, but according to one reader it is not so popular in the season. The water in Skinaria is very clear, the sand bright - a great beach.

You can also walk from Plakias via Damnoni and Amouti to Skinaria.
