Airport Chania

The airport of Chania is the significantly smaller of the two international airports on the Greek islands of Crete. However, the number of passengers flying to and from Chania has grown significantly in recent years. Especially the cheap airline Ryan Air uses Chania Airport frequently. This means that the number of passengers has risen to around 2.8 million in 2015. After Athens, Heraklion (also on the island of Crete), Thessaloniki and Rhodes, Chania is now the fifth largest airport in Greece. Chania International Airport Ioannis Daskalogiannis, for example, has overtaken Corfu, Santorini and Zakynthos.

One should note that the name of the city, especially in English, is often written without C at the beginning, thus "Hania". The international abbreviation (IATA code) of Hania Airport is "CHQ". Somewhat strange, since a "Q" does not occur in the name of the second largest city of Crete.

Location Airport Chania

The airport is located on a peninsula Akrotiri, about 14 kilometers from the center of the Chania Crete. The ferry port of Chania (port Souda) is about 10 km closer. The big tourist resorts Agia Marina and Platanias are seen from the airport Chania behind the city Chania and about 25 kilometers away. But one does not have to drive directly through the big city, there is a bypass comparable to a motorway. This "motorway of Crete connects all four provincial capitals on the island and bears the number 90 or E 75 at the bottom of the map.

Approach with your own vehicle

If you come from Heraklion or Rethimno by car you have to turn right before Chania on the expressway. The airport is signposted, but not always and everywhere. Many tourists get lost. Therefore, one should plan enough time when returning the rental car at the airport. Also from the city centre and other directions, the airport is often difficult to find for non-locals. Those who do not have a navigation device should plan a lot of time. Once one is on the peninsula Akrotiri, where the Chania Airport is located, one has mostly made it. From here, the airport is well signposted.

Orientation at the airport

The airport building is relatively small. You can quickly find the right switch. Although the airport of Hania has meanwhile 3 million passengers per year, the airport building looks more like that of a provincial airport. The public buses and taxis are easy to find. Most car rental offices are at the exit towards the city. After leaving the main building, turn left (about 100 meters). Gastronomy and toilets are only available in the building. The offer of restaurants and fast food is modest and expensive..

Our tip: Compensation for delays and cancellations of flights

Unfortunately, delays are also frequent on flights to Crete. Unfortunately? Some passengers are happy about delays of more than 3 hours. For some years now, passengers have been entitled to high compensation in many cases under EU law. If a flight to or from Crete is more than three hours late, you will very often receive 400 euros in compensation. Such a claim can be made 3 years retroactively. How much the flight cost in unimportant, you always get 400 euros.

The problem is that almost all airlines do not pay voluntarily. Alone or with a lawyer to enforce such a claim against the airline is difficult, a lot of work and not always successful. But there is a great way to get compensation without own financial risk. The company Flightright takes over the risk and the work. It only retains part of the compensation when the sum is paid out. You personally do not take any financial risk, Flightright takes over all costs. Who had a flight with more than 3 hours delay in the last 3 years and can use a few hundred euros, should definitely click here. All the people we know who have used the services of Flightright have been very satisfied.

By bus to Chania Airport

In recent years, the bus connection to the airport has improved considerably. Some years ago there were 4-5 bus connections per day, today there are about 30. There are mainly buses from the airport to the bus station of Chania. From the bus station, one walks approximately 500 metres to the city centre and the old town of Chania. You can change to other buses at the "Bus Station", as the bus station is called internationally: to Rethimnon and Heraklion (every hour during the day), to the nearby tourist resorts (Agia Marina, Platanias and Maleme several times per hour during the season). There are also buses to Paleochora (5-6 a day in summer), Kastelli-Kissamos (about 15 times a day), Kalives (about 8 a day, Sougia (about 2 times a day in season) and many other smaller towns.

Here is the bus schedule from Chania Airport to the center for the 2017 season (from April 1, 2017) :

Timetable from the bus station in the centre of Chania to the airport:

05:00, 07:00, 08:00, 08:30, 09:00, 09:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 12:00, 12:30, 13:00, 13:30, 14:30, 15:00, 16:00, 16:30, 17:00, 17:30, 18:00, 19:00, 19:30, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00, 21:30, 22:00, 22:30

Timetable for buses from Chania Airport to the centre of Chania (central bus station):

06:30, 08:15, 09:00, 09:30, 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, 12:00, 13:00, 13:30, 14:15, 14:45, 15:30, 16:00, 17:00, 17:30, 18:00, 18:30, 19:00, 20:00, 20:30, 21:00, 21:30, 22:00, 22:30, 23:15, 23:45

The buses run the same every day, even on weekends and public holidays, etc. In winter there is a completely different bus schedule with much fewer connections.

Buses directly to Rethymno from Chania Airport:

Fortunately there are direct buses from the airport to Rethymno. There are only a few bus connections daily, but you save a lot of time. As far as we know, these buses also stop in Souda, the port of Chania. Since April 2017 there are still some more buses on this line than in the previous year.

Bus schedule from Rethymno to Chania Airport: 04:30, 07:00, 12:00, 15:40, 18:30, 22:30

Timetable from the airport to Rethymno: 09:30, 14:30, 18:20, 21:00, 23:45

These buses also run every day, including Saturday and Sunday. They also stop at the port of Souda (the ferry port of Chania for the big ferries to Piraeus (Athens). So now you can take the public bus directly between the port and the airport on the nearby peninsula Arkotiri. A great improvement of the offer!

Taxis at Hania Airport

Of course, taxis wait 24 hours a day in front of the airport during the season. A taxi ride to the city centre makes sense especially when there is no bus (see bus timetable above). Taxis take passengers to any place on the island of Crete. Each driver speaks English. German is hardly understood.

Taxi fares: At the taxi stand in front of the airport is a large sign with taxi prices in the main places on Crete. Here you can read in early 2017 that a taxi to downtown Chania (about 15 to 20 kilometers) costs 20 euros. The price for a taxi to the tourist resort Platanias on the other side of Hania is 40 Euro. For a taxi ride from Chania airport to Rethimno, for example, one has to pay 94 €, to Plakias 140 €, to Paleochora 122 €. For a trip to the capital of Crete Heraklion, 200 euros are required. The most expensive is the trip to the small town Sitia in the very east of Crete (travel time 4-5 hours) with 374 Euro.

In any case, it is cheaper to take a taxi from the airport to the bus station in Chania and change there to one of the many long-distance buses. Buses to Rethymno and on to Heraklion run hourly from Chania during the day. In Rethymno you can change to many other places in Central Crete and Southern Crete (Agia Galini, Plakias). From Heraklion many buses go to the east of Crete (Agios Nikolaos via Chersonissos and Malia, Sitia and Ierapertra) and to the south (for example Mires and Matala).).

Rent a car

Some car rental companies pick up their customers with name tags directly from the flight. Mostly you have to find the car rental at the airport on your own. This is not particularly difficult in such a small airport as Chania. If the rental has no counter in the building, just go left at the exit. After a good 100 metres, one finds most car rentals next to each other. But we also heard about holidaymakers who unconsciously rented a car from a car rental company 1-2 kilometres away from the airport. When renting on the internet, you should make sure that the office is directly at the airport. We have seen Hertz, Budget, Sixt, Kydon and Trust counters in the airport, but there are some more.

Gastronomy at Chania Airport

We just saw a cafe at the airport. It belongs to the, to our knowledge Greek chain, "Flocafe". The prices are, as in most airports of the world, clearly higher than in the city. But there are also cheap bottles with drinking water (at the beginning of 2017 only 75 cents) and small toasts for little more than one euro. There are chairs and tables, but many also take a cup of coffee with them. Those who have a rental car will find many cafes and fast food shops in the vicinity of the airport of West Crete. We did not see a real restaurant or a Greek tavern in and around the airport.

Name of the airport

In Greek: Diethnis Aerolimenas Chanion Ioannis Daskalogiannis. The eponym Daskalogiannis was a very famous resistance fighter in the west of Crete. He comes from the region Sfakia in the south of the island Crete.

In English mostly: Chania International Airport, rarely with the addition: Ioannis Daskalogiannis

In German: Usually simply "Airport of Chania" or official: International airport of Chania "Ioannis Daskalogiannis".

As said before, in all variants the city name can also be written in the form of "Hania".
