The most expensive is the trip to the small town Sitia in the very east of Crete (travel time 4-5 hours) with 374 Euro. In any case, it is cheaper to take a taxi from the airport to the bus station in Chania and change there to one of the many long-distance buses. Buses to Rethymno and on to Heraklion run hourly from Chania during the day. In Rethymno you can change to many other places in Central Crete and Southern Crete (Agia Galini, Plakias). From Heraklion many buses go to the east of Crete (Agios Nikolaos via Chersonissos and Malia, Sitia and Ierapertra) and to the south (for example Mires and Matala).). Rent a car Some car rental companies pick up their customers with name tags directly from the flight. Mostly you have to find the car rental at the airport on your own. This is not particularly difficult in such a small airport as Chania. If the rental has no counter in the building, just go left at the exit. After a good 100 metres, one finds most car rentals next to each other. But we also heard about holidaymakers who unconsciously rented a car from a car rental company 1-2 kilometres away from the airport. When renting on the internet, you should make sure that the office is directly at the airport. We have seen Hertz, Budget, Sixt, Kydon and Trust counters in the airport, but there are some more.
We just saw a cafe at the airport. It belongs to the, to our knowledge Greek chain, "Flocafe". The prices are, as in most airports of the world, clearly higher than in the city.
