Falassarna

Falassarna is a large town without a real centre on the west coast of Crete. Many regulars, some of them with motorhomes, come to Falasarna. The large bay of Falassarna is considered windy and rainy. The waves in the sea are often high. For these reasons not too many tourists come to the area. On the other hand, the lack of mass tourism is the main argument for tourists coming to Falassarna.

Info Falassana

You can write the place name Falassarna with single-s or double-s (more frequently), an exact rule for our Latin script does not exist with many Greek place names. Especially in English you can read the spellings Phalasarna and Phalassana

Agriculture, above all tomatoes and olives, is the main branch of income in and around the municipality in Western Crete. Until a few years ago, tourism followed in second place. But it has caught up a lot. The bay is divided into two parts. In the southern half the greenhouses with tomatoes rule, in the north the hotels, taverns and beaches of the tourists. From above, if you drive down the street of Platanos, one has a splendid view.

If you come to Falasarna for a day trip, you should check the weather on the internet before. When the wind is westerly, the waves are high and the wind is very strong. It is often calm in Chania and surroundings, when the wind blows on the west coast with 6 or 7 Beaufort.

In summer there is a lot going on in Falasarna. Most guests come on weekends (especially Sundays) in August. Then there are many Greeks in the area.

In spring the attentive visitor will notice the many different, colourful flowers in the region. Do not pick the plants or damage them in any other way. Some species are extremely rare and, due to the special climate, can only be found on the short west coast of Crete. For example, the tulips of the species "Tulipa goulimyi" are impressive. They are large dark orange to brown-red flowers that bloom in March and April, i.e. before the tourist season.

The beach of Falasarna is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the west of Crete. This is why day-trippers from the major tourist resorts, such as Platanias 40 km to the east, come to the bay.

Near the sea are scattered room rentals, guesthouses and taverns. The main beach is a bit more crowded, there are also small beach bars. But even in summer there are rarely more than a few hundred holidaymakers in the bay. If the waves are high, there is also a larger, partly sheltered spot with a beach. In midsummer it is sometimes a bit cooler in Falassarna Bay than in other regions of Crete by the sea. As in most parts of Europe, west winds and north-west winds are frequent in Crete. As Falassarna is located in the north-west of the island, wind, waves and rain are more frequent here than in other parts of Crete.

Falasarna

Ancient Falassarna: In the north of the bay was in the ancient Greek time a port city. Some ruins like walls, towers and a part of the harbour are preserved and can be visited. But one does not see too much. It is controversially the purpose of an old large stone throne that has been standing here for thousands of years. An unpaved road leads to the ancient harbour, which is also suitable for a walk. From the end of the extended road at the Falasarna Bay Hotel, it is almost two kilometres. The ancient harbour is not directly at the sea, because the coast was different at that time.

Golden Lane Prague: One of the top attractions in the Czech capital.

Approach Falassarna

Buses: Only in season 2-3 times daily from and to Kissamos with connection to Chania (via Kolymbari and Maleme).

Almost all tourists come with their own vehicle. After Kissamos it is only a few kilometres from Falassarna as the crow flies, but on the pass road it is more than 15 km. The journey by rental car is easy. One leaves Kissamos on the through road in western direction and turns right in the village Platanos (Falassarna is signposted here). The area is often visited by rental car owners who make a day trip to the famous Elefonisi beach.

The inhabitants and regular holidaymakers of Falassarna often travel to the village of Platanos, 5 kilometres away, to go shopping (supermarkets, pharmacy, petrol station, etc.). In Falassarna itself there are only two mini-markets with drinks, biscuits and the like. There is no larger shop.

Food Falassarna

Very good and popular is the tavern Spilios on the road from Platanos down to the bay. The sautéed meat dishes (lamb, pork) are delicious. Sautéing is fast, but very hot, frying. Also the chicken with Hilopites (traditional pasta from Crete) sounds very interesting. Besides these old Cretan recipes, the restaurant Spilios also offers fresh fish, grilled meat dishes and fantastic salads. It is for us one of the best restaurants in Western Crete. From the restaurant you have a wonderful view of Falassarna from above.

In the southern part of Falassarna is the excellent tavern Vasilis. The meat and vegetables come from the region, the olive oil directly from Falassarna. Varied Greek cuisine, daily changing dishes.

Those who want to dine directly at the sea and watch the sunset can go to the tavern Sunset.

Falassanra is by the way the only bigger place on the west coast of Crete. Here you can watch romantic sunsets over the sea especially well, as the sun goes down in the west.
