One of the greatest fish
dishes on Crete is
the fish soup. Psarosoupa (also Psarosupa) is a main course, even if it is ‘just
a soup’.
The main ingredient in a Cretan fish soup is,
of course, fish. On the whole the fish is cut into big chunks which are soft
enough to be cut with the spoon. The fish is accompanied by potatoes, carrots,
onions and parsley. Many restaurants will also have some celery, rice and thyme
leaves in the mix.
What kind of fish is in the soup varies from
kitchen to kitchen. You can expect to find mullets, barbels, anglerfish and
breams. Typically there will be more than one kind of fish in the soup, which
will frequently be referred to on the menu e.g. ‘Psarasoupa – with four
different kinds of fish!’
The price of a simple Psarosoupa should be
around €6 in a restaurant, but prices vary. For locals, a Psarosoupa made with
rare and expensive fish can be an exclusive meal costing anywhere between € 30
and €50. Always ask for the price before ordering a psarosoupa, since you may be
paying more than you bargained for. Psarasoupa is, in any case, a delicious and
healthy soup which makes for an ideal lunch.
